CANON PERSONALITY:

"The best way to live a full life is to be a child, no matter what your age."

First impressions are key and Gintoki is absolutely terrible at it.

At a first glance, you will see an unconventional protagonist of a shounen series: someone who is almost unnecessarily crude, lazy, and also kind of gross. Unlike most JUMP protagonists, Gintoki isn't a spunky young man, ready and eager to fight evil in the name of friendship – he's actually quite the opposite. Not that he doesn't care about defeating a big, bad guy or anything – because he cares quite a lot whether he wants to admit it or not – he's just far from eager to do anything at all and has a penchant for procrastinating or avoiding everything entirely. Not to mention he has a bad tendency to shove his work onto other people (mostly Shinpachi and Kagura, who work with him Yorozuya), just so that he could maybe go out and treat himself to a nice parfait, or play some pachinko, instead of going to deal with some big problem. Anyone and everyone that knows Gintoki rightfully complains and criticizes him for his avoidant, messy, and lazy behavior... but it's not like he really takes it to heart. Yet, despite how much he so desperately does not want to work, Gintoki will still do whatever is requested of him... but he works on his own terms, and on his own time.

Gintoki is also the kind of guy who would much prefer to sit in his dirty underwear, reading some good ol' manga while picking his nose on the living room floor. He's childish, immature, and completely irresponsible. Even though he constantly complains about his age and "kids nowadays", Gintoki is still a young boy at heart, and maybe a little too much. On one hand, he cries when faced with ghosts, or even the dentist, and needs to sing the theme song to Doraemon to comfort himself. On the other hand, you could find him wiping his boogers on some poor passerby as he walks down the street, or gawking at beautiful women nearby, all the while completely shirking his responsibilities (like paying his 3-month overdue rent to his landlady, Otose).

If this doesn’t get Gintoki into all kinds of trouble, then his sharp-tongued rudeness does. Admittedly, Gintoki also has quite the short fuse on him and easily gets irritated at others or some unfortunate situation he's stuck in. He has a very loud personality and big, bold actions to back it up. It can be said that he's far too confident in himself and generally emits an air of bravado, which is pretty annoying for anyone and everyone that has to deal with it.

Apathetic to a lot of things in life, he's often found looking at everything through or with his infamous "dead fish eyes", which makes him more or less susceptible to pissing off the wrong guy. On that note, his incredible pettiness coupled with his ability to insult or fight just about anyone with little to no regard for age, status, or otherwise is incredibly dangerous, not that he really cares about getting into a street fight. Because of this, he tends to get into scuffles simply because he couldn’t help but bite back – or just bite. This can be seen in most of his interactions with the other characters, most notably with Hijikata Toshirou who he has no qualms insulting or provoking on a daily basis (but it might partially be due to his naturally sadistic personality). And, when it comes to insults, he’s a fast thinker and hard hitter. His quick wit alongside his typically irritated tone allows for humorous, but also insulting, comebacks, or even inspiring (if not rude) quotes in the middle of an intense confrontation. At the same time, however, he runs into a lot of problems that are equally humorous (or distressing) because he keeps running his mouth.

“There were two things I wanted to protect. I didn't want to lose either of them. But it ended up where if I didn't throw one of them, I would end up losing both. I tried to protect both, but that was the same throwing both away... Even now, I dream about it... Wondering if there was some better way.”

Now, it wouldn't be fair to write Gintoki off as just a simple funnyman in a silly manga. Gintoki's past is a strong burden to him, one that he carries without a word. Only his friends from the Joui War know about the heavy weight he holds on his shoulders, and the pain that carries over even into the present day. Without a doubt, Gintoki resents himself for all the choices he's made, and the choices that he didn't make. He lost so many people that he held close to him and he constantly dreams of the war or of his dead friends haunting him even to this day. As a result, he lives his life recklessly and with abandon, oftentimes without care for his own safety. This is the pain that he hides underneath layers and layers of extreme childishness, laziness, and apathy.

The biggest and most troubling thing that haunts Gintoki to this day is the memory of himself beheading his teacher, Yoshida Shouyou. He was forced to choose between the life of his friends or the life of the man he considered a mentor and a parent, but ultimately and tearfully decapitated Shouyou with the promise to protect everything else. As a result, underneath his more exaggerated, comedic features, there's a man who has a strong desire to protect and to save those around him.

Gintoki is, without a doubt, genuinely kind and caring as he goes to extreme lengths in order to keep his friends and family safe, or to make a customer happy. This is how he draws so many people towards him despite his initial rudeness or apathy. Regardless of how lazy, unwilling, and apathetic he may appear to be, he's someone that keeps his promises no matter how troublesome or inconvenient it may be for him. So, he constantly puts his life on the line to help others (with the occasional complaint). You could describe him as being self-destructive in this manner, or you could say that he's just self-sacrificing, but it's because that he's failed to protect the important things to him in the past – because he's a man so full of regret – that he's so determined to protect things now, whether its his own or someone else's.

His relationship with Shinpachi and Kagura reflect this perfectly. As independent and hardheaded he may be, he's seen to deeply cherish the bonds and relationships he's formed with his Yorozuya and the others feel the same way. For them, Gintoki would do almost anything. This is seen in his determination to keep Shinpachi from killing his brother figure, Obi Hajime, in order to save him from the same fate Gintoki had gone through, as well as desperately saving Kagura from being engulfed and killed by an alien. You could say that he adopts a fatherly or brotherly attitude towards Yorozuya, making them feel like a real family, which is something Gintoki has needed for a long time.

But, let's not forget that this is Gintoki here. No matter what, at the end of the day, Gintoki will still revert back to his silly, childish, pervert, and lazy ways... and that's something that'll never change.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Strength/Endurance/Reflexes: Like most shounen characters, Gintoki possesses inhuman strength and endurance. He has an easy time breaking walls or buildings (comically or otherwise), but he can also take a lot of hits/lose more blood than you would think is humanely possible. Gintoki is also incredibly agile and dexterous, which is only heightened when he's angry or frustrated in the middle of an intense fight.

Combat: Gintoki was self-taught from a young age how to wield a sword. He had to for survival, but soon after being found by Shouyou, he was given proper training and went on to be a master in this. Being such an excellent samurai gave him the title of "Shiroyasha" which he doesn't really go by anymore, but he was infamous for cutting down all in his path. On that note, he still uses his expert abilities when in a tough situation, so he's not at all rusty. However, he only uses a wooden sword instead of a metal one. Aside from being able to wield a sword, Gintoki can hold his own with just his fist as well. And, he has incredible fighting instincts from his history of war.

Ghosts???: Gintoki can see and talk to ghosts/spirits. He hates it So Much.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Sakata Gintoki
AU AGE: 26
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: Gintoki’s hair will change from that sleek silver/white to a nice, normal brown that he actually dyed blond. His eyes will also be more on the brown side too! Other than that, his outfit will be more uh... contemporary? It'll probably be a white T-shirt with a simple, blue design and the tightest jeans you can imagine. Also, he won't have any battle scars or major bodily trauma visible. The most he'll probably have is a paper cut that he could never stop picking at.
AU HISTORY:

I have permission from the Charlotte applicant (from Hello Charlotte) to add her into my background!

• Gintoki was an orphan roaming the streets of Hagi, Japan. He was found by a young, ordinary schoolteacher by the side of the road and was promptly saved from a life in the streets by him.
• His life was normal, aside from the fact that he was actually a big troublemaker, and it was especially bad when he was with a couple of his close classmates.
• In an act of rebellion, he decided to move to Recollé to attend college, but resulted in him leaving his friends and father behind (as far as he knows).
• Gintoki very quickly found out and decided that he absolutely hates college, but he was also too embarrassed to tell his dad that he wasted thousands of dollars to move overseas… so he just let fate work its magic.
• Of course, this ended completely poorly for him. As a result, Gintoki was kicked out his rented apartment and hardly had any money for food or shelter. Whenever he did have money, however, he would spend it on gambling, alcohol, porn, or manga.
• It was nearly impossible to get in contact with him, especially as someone who kept jumping from place to place, without a purpose in life. Though he might not have seemed like it with how jovial he was and how often he denied it, Gintoki certainly fell into a depression into this time.
• One day, he was found collapsed in the streets, starving and hungry. A kind stranger took him to the hospital to get some treatment and, when he woke up, he came across a young girl. An orphan, like how he was when he was a child, named Charlotte clung to him for… some reason that he still can’t comprehend, but he couldn’t help but become endeared to her. Despite outright rejecting her at first (“Hey, go mooch off some rich guy instead!”), Gintoki eventually but reluctantly took her under his wing.
• Something like this was an important wake up call to him, and it forced him to realize that he couldn’t keep living on the streets if he wants to take care of a poor, defenseless kid on the streets. So, he tried to clean himself up the best he could and let go of his pride to beg for the most menial job he could get in order to save up money and find a place for the two of them to stay.
• Now, they live as a weird family (Gintoki has no idea what he’s doing) in the family apartments of Crimson Crest. Gintoki has also converted his living space into an office where he takes requests for odd jobs.

AU PERSONALITY:

• Gintoki, for the most part, is practically the same. There just won't be as much depth and meaning into his small, sacrificial actions, considering he wasn't forced to choose between the lives of his allies and the life of his teacher/parent figure.
• On that note, he doesn't have nightmares about his dead comrades/dying friends coming back to haunt him in this AU.
• He's still addicted to parfaits/sweet treats, but he's not a heavy drinker, nor is he a heavy gambler anymore. After he decided to take care of Charlotte, Gintoki stopped going to the casino and buying So Much Beer everyday. Instead, he'll enjoy a few drinks with his friends whenever he goes out, or one at home on the couch, but he tries not to get drunk for Charlotte's sake.
• Gintoki is a lot less slapstick and, in general, his overall presence is cooled down a lot. He definitely won't be able to handle explosions from a bazooka anymore, nor will he be able to lose insane amounts of blood. That being said, Gintoki probably won't kick his friends around or throw them into buildings and whatnot.
• I mean, he's still going to yell and be super animated when the time calls for it, but he's mostly going to be a normal bum.
• He's also an amazing dad and tries to give Charlotte as much as he can! He'd be the soccer mom at the match screaming the loudest and wearing headbands/waving a flag of Charlotte, much to the dismay of everyone around him.
